2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
There is no denying the first generation Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class set the standard for 4-door Coupe design and has since given rise to other impersonators, but does the new 2012 design continue the heritage of the original?
We at Walter's think so! The handsome new design wears the new corporate image grille design and the sweeping side character line of the past iteration is now broken at the rear door making room for sculpted haunches that give the CLS-Class a more aggressive stance. At the rear the changes aren't as dramatic, more curvature defines the top trunk line and swooped tail lights frame the deck lid but the original design can still be seen. Inside the new interior design still conveys the Mercedes-Benz style and feeling of luxury but leaves most if not all of the original design behind.
The biggest change lies under the hood of the new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Instead of a naturally aspirated V8, the new CLS-Class gets a new twin-turbocharged V8 that delivers 402 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque to the CLS550 and a whopping 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque to the CLS63. The new engine boosts performance yet reduces emissions and boosts fuel economy in the new design. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a buttery smooth standard 7-speed automatic transmission and for those that like even more traction, a 4MATIC® version will also be made available.
While the new CLS550 rides on 18-inch rims and tires, the CLS63 gets an increase to 19-inch wheels and rubber and the airmatic semi-active suspension and three-link independent front and multi-link rear suspensions keep the CLS-Class glued to the road while providing a comfortable ride. Four piston calipers and 14.2-inch rotors up front handle most of the stopping needs assisted by single piston calipers and 12.6-inch rotors at the rear.
